2. What Is the DJI Osmo Mobile 7P?

The DJI Osmo Mobile 7P is a 3-axis gimbal (handheld stabilizer) for smartphones. It uses motorized stabilization to eliminate camera shake, allowing you to capture smooth footage. Released in February 2025, it is the latest generation of the product and marks the first update in approximately three years since the previous model, the Osmo Mobile 6 (2022).

Key Features:

  • 3-Axis Stabilizer — Corrects camera shake across three axes: pan, tilt, and roll
  • ActiveTrack 7.0 — The latest generation of subject tracking. Capable of tracking scenes with multiple people or subjects that have temporarily left the frame
  • Multi-Function Module — Integrates a tracking camera, LED fill light, and DJI Mic Mini wireless receiver into a single unit (standard on the 7P)
  • Built-in Extension Rod — Extends up to 215mm (7P only; not available on the standard 7)
  • Built-in Tripod — Integrated into the bottom of the gimbal
  • Approx. 10 Hours of Continuous Operation — Over 3 hours longer than the previous Model 6
  • MagSafe Compatible — Quickly attach and detach with a magnetic quick-release mount for iPhone 12 and later models

3. Contents and Setup

3.1 Checking the Contents of the Package

Once you’ve opened the package, check to see if the following items are included.

  • Osmo Mobile 7P unit (with multi-function module attached)
  • Magnetic smartphone clamp (MagSafe compatible)
  • Handheld tripod (may be included separately in addition to the one built into the unit)
  • USB-C charging cable
  • Carrying pouch
  • Quick Start Guide

3.2 Charging

Charge the device using a USB-C cable. A full charge provides approximately 10 hours of use. Be sure to check the charge level before heading out.

3.3 Unfolding and First-Time Startup

Unfold the gimbal from its folded position. Press and hold the power button (M button) on the grip to turn it on. The first time you turn it on, the gimbal will automatically level itself, so place it on a flat surface and wait.

4. Setting Up Your iPhone and the DJI Mimo App

4.1 Pre-shoot Checks for the iPhone Camera

Before connecting the gimbal, check the camera settings on your iPhone. For details, see the Smartphone Shooting page. At a minimum, check the following:

  • Video resolution: 1080p HD/30 fps (4K/60 fps is also available depending on your editing needs)
  • Format: Selecting “Compatibility Priority” (H.264) makes editing on a PC easier

4.2 Installing the DJI Mimo App

Search for “DJI Mimo” in the App Store and install it. When you launch the app for the first time, create an account or sign in with your DJI account.

DJI Mimo is an app that handles both shooting and editing. This page focuses solely on the shooting features.

4.3 Pairing with the Gimbal (Bluetooth)

  1. Turn on Bluetooth on your iPhone
  2. Turn on the gimbal
  3. Launch DJI Mimo → Select “Osmo Mobile 7P” on the device selection screen
  4. You may be prompted to update the firmware the first time you use it. Follow the instructions to update

Once you’ve paired the devices, they’ll connect automatically whenever you turn them both on.

5. Mounting the iPhone on the gimbal

5.1 Attaching with a Magnetic Clamp (iPhone 12 and later)

On MagSafe-compatible iPhone 12 models and later, the included magnetic clamp attaches to the back of the iPhone via MagSafe. The clamp itself snaps securely onto the magnetic plate at the tip of the gimbal. The ability to attach and detach it quickly is a major advantage.

You can use it if your case is compatible with MagSafe. However, you’ll need to remove thick folio cases and similar accessories.

5.2 Balance Adjustments

Once you’ve attached your smartphone, move the balance adjustment slider on the gimbal arm to level it. If the arm tilts to one side when you let go, slide the slider in the opposite direction of the tilt.

If the balance is off, it puts a strain on the motor, causing louder operating noises and faster battery drain. Be sure to adjust the balance whenever you switch to a new iPhone or change your case.

5.3 Switching Between Landscape and Portrait Orientation

By rotating the smartphone clamp 90 degrees, you can switch between landscape and portrait orientation. Use portrait mode for social media (Reels, TikTok, Shorts), and landscape mode for YouTube and standard videos.

6. Basic Operations

The gimbal body features the following controls.

  • M Button (Mode/Power) — Press once: Switch gimbal modes / Press and hold: Turn power on/off
  • Shutter Button — Start/stop recording / Single press for still photos (depending on mode)
  • Joystick — Manually control the gimbal’s pan and tilt directions
  • Trigger (Rear) — Lock gimbal while pressed / Press twice in quick succession: Return to center / Press three times in quick succession: Flip for selfie mode
  • Side Wheel — Zoom or manual focus control (assignment can be switched in the DJI Mimo app)
  • Switch Button — Front/rear camera switch, landscape/portrait switch (location varies by model)

The button names follow the official DJI manual. It’s quickest to learn them by comparing them with the markings and labels on the actual device. For each button’s location, see “Names of Parts” on p.5 of the official manual PDF.

7. Choosing the Right Gimbal Mode

Each time you press the M button, the display cycles through the following options.

Guidelines for choosing the right mode during class: If you’re unsure, use PTF; for panning shots, use PF; and for fast-paced first-person footage, use FPV.

8. Key Shooting Features

8.1 ActiveTrack 7.0 (Subject Tracking)

The gimbal automatically tracks people, faces, animals, and objects, keeping the subject centered in the frame. When the multi-function module is facing forward, it can be recognized by the iPhone’s camera apps (including the standard and streaming apps).

There are two ways to operate it:

  • Point the palm of your hand at the multifunction module → Recognition begins and tracking starts
  • Press the trigger button once → Tracking of the subject in the center of the screen begins

You can also stop tracking with a single press of the trigger. This is useful for group photos, sports, and shooting children or pets.

8.2 Multifunction Module (Standard on 7P)

The square unit at the front of the gimbal. It integrates three functions.

  • Tracking Camera — Used for the ActiveTrack detection mentioned above
  • LED Fill Light — Auxiliary lighting for low-light shooting (brightness and color temperature adjustable)
  • DJI Mic Mini Receiver — Pairs directly with DJI’s Mic Mini wireless microphone. Significantly improves audio quality compared to the iPhone’s built-in microphone

It can be detached using a switch and used on its own as needed.

8.3 Gesture Controls

You can remotely control the gimbal’s movements using hand gestures on the subject’s side (the side facing the camera).

  • Show your palm to the camera — Start/stop tracking
  • “OK” gesture — Start/stop recording (when using DJI Mimo)

Great for taking selfies or photos by yourself.

8.4 Using the Built-in Extension Rod

Pulling out the rod at the bottom of the grip extends it by up to 215 mm.

  • High angle — A shot looking down on a crowd from above
  • Low angle — A tracking shot taken just above the ground
  • Group selfie — A photo that fits multiple people into the frame

If you extend the rod and set up the tripod at the base, it can also be used as a remote shooting stand.

8.5 Panoramas, Time-Lapses, and Hyperlapses

Select from the shooting modes in DJI Mimo.

  • Panorama — The gimbal automatically rotates to stitch images together (3×3, 240°, etc.)
  • Time-lapse — Compresses the passage of time while stationary (clouds, sunsets)
  • Hyperlapse — Fast-forward footage while moving (city walks, architecture)
  • Motion Lapse — The gimbal automatically moves along a preset path while capturing a time-lapse

Time-lapse shots come out more stable when the camera is secured using the built-in tripod or a tripod with an extension rod.

9. Basic Photography Techniques

9.1 Tips for Shooting While Walking

  • PF mode is recommended — This keeps the camera stable and minimizes horizontal shake
  • Bend your knees slightly and land on your heels — This helps absorb vibrations
  • Hold the gimbal lightly in front of your body — Keep your arms relaxed
  • Walk slowly — Walking too fast tends to cause the screen to shake

9.2 Low Angle and High Angle

  • You can easily change the angle by extending the rod
  • Holding the grip upside down (“undershoot”) is also effective. When shooting in undershoot mode, DJI Mimo automatically flips the video

9.3 Cinematic Shots

  • Reveal Shot — Slowly pan from behind an obstacle to reveal the subject
  • Tracking — Move alongside the subject (PF mode recommended)
  • Orbit — Move in a full circle around the subject

DJI Mimo’s “Story Mode” comes with several pre-set templates, so we recommend playing around with those first.

10. Using on Android

The DJI Osmo Mobile 7P is also compatible with Android devices (such as Pixel, Galaxy, and Xperia). The basic operation is the same as with an iPhone, but please note the following.

  • DJI Mimo (Android version) can be installed from the Google Play Store
  • Connect via a USB-C cable — Since magnetic clamps like MagSafe (used on iPhones) cannot be used, the device must be physically clamped in place using the included clamp
  • Check Compatibility — Be sure to check the official DJI compatibility list beforehand to confirm that your device is included
  • Functional Limitations — Some features (particularly high-bitrate recording) may be limited compared to the iPhone version due to restrictions in the Android camera API

11. Troubleshooting

Symptom What to Check
Gimbal keeps tilting to one side Readjust the balance slider. Check if you’ve changed your phone case
Can’t connect via Bluetooth Restart both devices → Remove the device from “Device Management” in the DJI Mimo app → Re-pair
ActiveTrack isn’t responding Check if the multi-function module is attached and if the lens is dirty
